Located in Suzhou, China, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) is a young, dynamic and EMI university founded in 2006. It is a unique collaborative institution and the first joint venture university in China to offer both UK (University of Liverpool) and Chinese (Department of Education) accredited undergraduate degrees for over 100 programmes. XJTLU also aims to become truly research-oriented and has made significant investments in research development and increasing the number of masters and doctoral students on campus. Description of school and department
The International Business School Suzhou (IBSS) at Xi’an Jiaotong University-Liverpool is growing in size and influence in pursuit of its vision to be a leading international business school. The school is based on strong principles of internationalism, innovation, inspiration and integrity, which together ensure that we have a positive impact on society through our teaching, research and business engagement. . In this pursuit, IBSS became the youngest business school to be accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) in 2016, and again, the youngest school to receive EQUIS accreditation in 2018. Receiving joint AMBA and BGA accreditation in 2020, IBSS became the 103rd triple-accredited business school in the world.
The five departments of IBSS are Accounting, Economics, Finance, Intelligent Operations and Marketing, and Strategic Management and Organizations with over 150 faculty members and over 5,000 students from over 60 countries different. IBSS offers a range of undergraduate, postgraduate, MBA, PhD and executive education programs in all major business disciplines.
At present, the Economics Department has a team of 34 academics, regularly publishing in high-quality international economic journals, utilizing internal and external research grants, and also actively engaging in research collaboration with researchers around the world. The Department of Economics at IBSS has launched the Society for the Advancement in Economic Studies (SAES), which is a platform for interdisciplinary research collaboration with academics and also with practitioners on relevant economic issues. In addition, the department also emphasizes behavioral economics and hosts the IBSS Experimental Economics Lab as well as the IBSS Biometrics Lab. The academic staff of the Department of Economics offers a range of undergraduate, postgraduate, MBA, doctoral and executive education programs in the areas of economics and research methods. In particular, the professors mainly teach both the highly popular BSc Economics and BSc Economics & Finance undergraduate programs and postgraduate programs including MSc Economics & Finance and MSc Business Analytics.
Roles and responsibilities:
Supporting its rapid expansion, IBSS is now seeking to appoint new faculty to join the Economics Department. This is an exciting opportunity for economics scholars to be part of a young, fast-growing and internationally recognized institution located in the heart of one of the most innovative and entrepreneurial economic zones in China.
IBSS offers a truly research-friendly environment, a low teaching load, and a range of research support opportunities. Research activities include publication of research articles, development of external grant applications and presentation of scholarly work at international conferences. The school’s research performance is benchmarked against quality lists of internationally recognized journals such as the Academic Journal Guide (UK) – aka the ABS list – and the ABDC list (AUS). The target levels on these lists are ABS3/ABDC-A or higher.
Essential Qualifications/Experience
Successful candidates for the position of Assistant/Associate Professor must have:
- A doctorate in economics or a related field,
- Teaching experience in higher education,
- A proven record of scholarly publications in good journals, or alternatively, for early-career scholars, a strong pipeline of promising research.
Successful applicants to more senior faculty ranks must also show:
- An important file of high quality academic publications,
- A number of external research grants,
- Experience in doctoral supervision.
Desirable qualifications/experience
Successful candidates for the position of Assistant/Associate Professor should preferably possess the following qualities:
- Experience in program design and program development,
- Commitment to the professional community,
- Adaptability to work in a collegial environment
Remuneration package:
Salaries and benefits are competitive and commensurate with rank and experience. Academic staff members receive generous grants for accommodation, travel, relocation, children’s education, and medical insurance. Non-Chinese passport holders are eligible for multi-year tax “holidays”, depending on nationality and tax residency.
Citizenship and visa regulations:
Employment at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is regulated by Chinese labor laws and must comply with provincial government regulations. These regulations stipulate who is eligible for legal employment with respect to obtaining work permits and visas. Please note that applicants over the age of 60 may not be eligible for a work visa in the People’s Republic of China.
